Your “Best Friend”

Posted by Barry Marenberg on August 19, 2012

Your lacrosse stick is your “tool”. When you step out on the lacrosse field you have a role, a job, a responsibility to your team and yourself to play the best you possibly can. In the game of lacrosse you can’t do that without a necessary tool: your stick. Your stick should become your “best friend”.

For your tool and best friend to function as well as it possibly can, you need to take care of it!. It very often requires a fair amount of TLC. Don’t take it for granted. First off, you have to love it. If you are not happy with the way your stick is strung, have it restrung. Ask your coach or your teammates who are happy with their sticks and get their recommendations for someone to restring your head for you. If your top or side strings are torn – replace them. If your shooting strings have loosened and your passes and shots are not flying the way you like them too, then fix your shooting strings. Many times the weather doesn’t cooperate and we are forced to play games in the rain. Rain can really affect your mesh and the pocket in your stick. After a game in the rain, take a good look at your pocket and make sure you are happy with the way the mesh has dried. If you don’t like it, fix it – but fix it before the next practice or game! Different types of mesh are affected differently by the rain. Anyone playing with traditional stringing (bonus points for you! ūüėČ – on the right is the stick I am currently playing with) also knows that you need to care for your leathers and adjust them periodically. Additionally, make sure your pocket hasn’t sagged to a point where it is or is close to an illegal pocket. You surely don’t want your goal wiped out in a crucial game and your stick removed because of an illegal pocket that you could very well have fixed if you just gave your stick a little tune-up.¬† For some tips on getting a good pocket in your stick, see my post of February 23, 2011 Is Your Stick Ready?

Remember also, it’s YOUR stick. It doesn’t matter if your teammates think it throws badly, as long as it works for YOU. Everyone’s stick is different, but serves the same purpose. It’s kind of like the lacrosse flip flops all the players seem so fond of – even with the exact flip flops, two people will break them in differently, to make them uniquely theirs.

I actually started this article back in the Spring and shelved it when I got busy with work-related stuff.¬† As many boys (and girls) begin to get ready for tryouts for next summer’s elite teams, I felt this article was now timely.¬† Best of luck to everyone in their upcoming tryouts.

A big shout out to my friends at Lacrosse Allstars (  If you are not already doing it, be sure to find some way to Grow The Game!

See you on the field!

For those of you in my area, Chiefs Lacrosse registration is now open for Spring 2012.¬†¬† Go to and click the “Registration” link on the left-hand column.¬† After December 31st, late fees kick in so register now and avoid the late fees.¬†

Don’t let Winter and the Holidays slow you down! Lax is a way of life.

Posted by Barry Marenberg on November 29, 2010

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!  Congratulations to all the players who were invited to join 2011 Summer Elite Teams in our area.

As we approach the holiday season and the winter doldrums, don’t let that be a barrier to continuing your preparation for the Spring lacrosse season. There are plenty of opportunities to play lacrosse and work on lacrosse skills over the Winter months.

– ISP has a winter league.¬† While I am not coaching a team this winter, any player can enroll directly with ISP and be placed on a team needing an individual player.¬† Information about ISP’s winter league can be accessed here:

РBuilding Blocks has clinics for lacrosse players of all levels.  They are held at the former Copper Springs bubble in Gillette.  The Building Blocks programs are top-notch and a great opportunity to really work on improving as a lacrosse player.  A description of the BBL clinics can be viewed here:

РPatriot Lacrosse and STEPS Lacrosse offer a number of opportunities over the holidays and throughout the winter.  A list of these clinics and courses are usually posted on the ISP website.

РThe Chiefs will be offering the Full Force Lacrosse Winter Clinic starting Sunday December 5th.  I will be coaching with Full Force.  If you would like more information about the Full Force clinic contact me or send an email to

At the VERY least, working on your own on cradling, stick skills, footwork and speed can go a long way come the Spring.  If I can be of any help to anyone, do not hesitate to contact me.

Our Winter Season Comes To An End…

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 21, 2010

Well, our season has come to an end.¬† I had a great time coaching the team this Winter and I hope all the players had a lot of fun.¬† I know we all wish our record could have been different but as I said from the start, this Winter season was simply about having fun and staying active.¬†¬† We had a number of brand new players for this winter season, some who scored their first lacrosse goals ever! ¬†We had a goalie who never stepped into a crease prior to the start of this season.¬† I’m proud of all the players for showing up each week and giving it their best.¬†

I look forward to continuing to work with all the players as we move into the Chiefs Spring season.  I also want to thank Brendan Cook and Pierson Churchill, our two players from Chatham, for being a part of our team this season.  I hope to see you guys in the Spring!

Keep practicing guys!

Friday Night 2/12 Game

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 9, 2010

Our game this week is on Friday (2/12) at 6pm on Field 1 vs Sparta.  Recall that we played Sparta to a tie in week 1 of the season so it would be great to beat them straight up this time.

Please be at ISP by 5:30pm to dress and warm up.  If you will be unable to play this week, please let me know ASAP.

See you on the field!

Winter League Playoffs

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 1, 2010

First off, I just wanted to say what a great game the team played on Friday night vs Highlands.  It was a total team win.  All the boys contributed by playing defense, scoring and great passing.  It was a vast improvement over the previous weeks.  We need to maintain this momentum!

This week is our first playoff game.  The game is scheduled for SATURDAY (2/6) at 9pm on Field 1 vs. Kinnelon.  All players should be at ISP by 8:30pm.  If any player cannot make the game on Saturday night, please contact me ASAP.

Turning upwards…

Posted by Barry Marenberg on January 26, 2010

After 2 losses over the last couple of weeks we turned ourselves around this past Friday and fought to a 7-7 tie against Millburn.¬† The boys passed the ball substantially more than they had in past weeks and the increased passing created more scoring opportunities.¬† Lets continue this and build on it for the coming week’s game.

Our game this Friday (1/25) is vs. Highlands.  Gametime is 6pm and we are playing on Field 2 (the field on which we beat Summit!).  Please have your player at ISP by 5:30pm.

This week’s game is our last “regular season” winter game.¬† After this weekend the league will rank all the teams based on their records and seed them for the playoffs, which begin on Friday February 5th.¬† Once I have the playoff schedule I will e-mail all of you and also post it here.

See you on the field!  Lets finish out the season with a big WIN!!
