Elite Team Tryouts: A Harsh Reality with a Silver Lining

Posted by Barry Marenberg on September 22, 2011

Many times over the years, and more and more recently, parents have called or emailed me after their sons have attended tryouts for elite lax teams.  Often they are confused about how their sons are evaluated and then why their sons didn’t make it and why they were charged so much money for a 90 minute or 2 hour tryout.  After hearing from so many parents and responding to each and every one of them in kind, I drafted an article that was posted online today by my good buddy, Connor Wilson, the editor of Lacrosse AllStars.  I think (hope!) the article will give everyone some insight into the hows and whys of these elite lacrosse team tryouts that your sons partake in.  Give it a read by clicking the following link: Lacrosse Elite Team Tryouts and let me have your thoughts, comments and additional questions (there is a comment button at the end of the post).

HONOR THE GAME!

I plan to add this article as a hardcopy to the top of the blog at some point.

Weekend at Summer Slam in West Chester, PA (6/25 – 6/26 2011)

Posted by Barry Marenberg on June 28, 2011

This past weekend, Zander’s BBL Elite 2017 team played in the Summer Slam at the West Town School in West Chester, PA.  First off, I’ll say that the campus on which this tournament was played was beautiful.  What a great venue for weekend tournament!

Z’s team had 2 big wins on Saturday over Conshy Dogs and Team 380.  A loss to the Philadelphia Fever was sandwiched between the wins.  Most of the team stayed in the same hotel for this tournament so the boys were able to hang out after the games on Saturday and do some swimming, etc.  Unfortunately we lost our first game on Sunday afternoon to the Buffalo Wild Wings from Maryland.  They boys put up a good fight against a team that was heavy on 7th graders.   I think the players are learning more and more how to read each other and the chemistry is getting stronger and stronger.

We have the 4th of July weekend off and then we head to Princeton for the 3 day Tri-State Tournament.

Weekend at Summer Exposure in Gambrills, MD (6/18 – 6/19 2011)

Posted by Barry Marenberg on June 22, 2011

This past weekend  Zander’s Building Blocks Lacrosse (BBL) Elite 2017 team played in the Hogan Lax Summer Exposure Tournament.  This was my first time at a Maryland tournament.  It was a fantastic experience.  Z’s team – playing together competitively for the first time – was fantastic.  Sure, they had their ups and their downs but there were MANY more ups than down.

They played 3 games on Saturday and went 2-1 with two big wins (over NoVa West Venom and  Morristown Elite) and one very close loss against one of the best teams in the tournament (Virginia Lacrosse Club Mohicans).  On Sunday we were the third seed and won our first game (vs. Big Dog Lax) by the score of 12-4 but then lost in the semi-final game to the Baltimore Breakers.  Sure we were all upset but overall it was an incredibly successful weekend.  All the players bonded in a big way and had a great deal of fun.  Our final game on Saturday was a 8pm in the increasing darkness of the evening.  As we ended the game, the players could barely see the ball anymore.  The parents also got along great and we all participated in some great tailgating on Saturday and Sunday.

Unlike the Spring lacrosse season when the teams are comprised of players having a wide disparity of skill levels, the summer elite teams are typically all “A” level players.  The ball stays in the air much more than it does in the Spring season games and the ball and players move constantly and play much more aggressively.  As a Coach, its extremely enjoyable to be on the “other side” of the field as a spectator.  I really enjoy watching my son and all his teammates being coached by others and excelling on the field.  Z’s BBL Elite 2017 team is solid from top to bottom.  There are no weak spots on the roster.

To my new players who started playing lax this Spring, if you are serious about the sport, I highly encourage you to try out for a Summer team for next Summer.  It’s an amazing experience (for parents too!) and you come away a vastly improved player.

Zander and his BBL Elite 2017 team is off to the Summer Slam Tournament in West Chester, PA is this weekend.  Look for a report after the weekend.

See you on the field!

Summer….

Posted by Barry Marenberg on June 14, 2011

I’ve gone a little over a week now with no team to coach and I do admit that while its nice to relax, I often find myself wishing I had a roster to set up for an upcoming game, etc. Fortunately my son is now well into practices for his summer travel team – we head to Annapolis this weekend for his first tournament of the summer – The Summer Exposure.   This will be my first time at a Maryland lax tourney so I’ll report on that next week.

In my searching around on the internet for all things lacrosse, I found this fantastic video of 2011 NCAA Division I lax highlights. Great stuff! Gives me chills!

See you on the field (over the summer!)

Summer Select Team Tryout Advice from Coach B

Posted by Barry Marenberg on October 20, 2010

Summer select team tryouts start this weekend.  For those of you trying out, the following is a few pieces of advice I can offer from my past experiences attending these tryouts with my son:

  1. You have 2 hours (or whatever the tryout is) to make the best impression possible.  It is not a long time so give it your ALL.  100% effort from start to finish.
  2. If you get beat, fall down, make a mistake – get right back up and right back into whatever you are doing.  Do not dwell on the mistake.  Recover and move on.
  3. Show your skills but be a team player as well.  If you knock a guy down, help him up and pat him on the back.
  4. There will be many coaches at these tryouts and they are all watching you (even when you think they are not).
    1. If you are waiting online for your turn in a drill, don’t be talking or laughing it up about anything.  Cheer on the other players.
  5. Don’t dwell on which team or league is “better” than the other – at this point in time you should just be focusing on playing and improving yourself as a lacrosse player.
  6. Don’t be nervous.  Its lacrosse.  Most of you have been playing it for years now.  Its nothing new.  Have fun.  If you are having fun you will do your best.

If any parent or player has any questions or wants to talk with me prior to tryouts I invite you to call or e-mail me.  I wish you all the best of luck!

Pre-Summer Team Tryout Throw Around This Saturday (10/16/10)

Posted by Barry Marenberg on October 13, 2010

As many of you know, tryouts for the Summer 2011 Select teams begin shortly (see my prior posting).  I will be holding an informal throw around at AirCast field on Saturday from 2-3pm (weather permitting).  The throw around is open to players on all Chiefs teams.  If your son is planning to try out for the first time or if your son has played Summer lacrosse before but wants to come out and throw around this is a great opportunity. Players can work on skills, ask questions and get some insight about the tryout process.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
