Don’t let Winter and the Holidays slow you down! Lax is a way of life.

Posted by Barry Marenberg on November 29, 2010

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!  Congratulations to all the players who were invited to join 2011 Summer Elite Teams in our area.

As we approach the holiday season and the winter doldrums, don’t let that be a barrier to continuing your preparation for the Spring lacrosse season. There are plenty of opportunities to play lacrosse and work on lacrosse skills over the Winter months.

– ISP has a winter league.  While I am not coaching a team this winter, any player can enroll directly with ISP and be placed on a team needing an individual player.  Information about ISP’s winter league can be accessed here: http://www.indoorsportspavilion.com/Pages/Lacrosse.htm

– Building Blocks has clinics for lacrosse players of all levels.  They are held at the former Copper Springs bubble in Gillette.  The Building Blocks programs are top-notch and a great opportunity to really work on improving as a lacrosse player.  A description of the BBL clinics can be viewed here: http://www.bblax-portal.com/bblax_classes.php?season=winter&session=1

– Patriot Lacrosse and STEPS Lacrosse offer a number of opportunities over the holidays and throughout the winter.  A list of these clinics and courses are usually posted on the ISP website.

– The Chiefs will be offering the Full Force Lacrosse Winter Clinic starting Sunday December 5th.  I will be coaching with Full Force.  If you would like more information about the Full Force clinic contact me or send an email to chiefslax@gmail.com.

At the VERY least, working on your own on cradling, stick skills, footwork and speed can go a long way come the Spring.  If I can be of any help to anyone, do not hesitate to contact me.

Middie (and Attack) Defense

Posted by Barry Marenberg on November 22, 2010

As a former Defenseman I often spend a great deal of my coaching time working with the longpoles.  I am, however, of the strong belief that every position on the field must understand how to play defense.  With particular respect to Middies and Attackmen, scoring is only 50% of their “job”.   The other 50% involves playing DEFENSE!  When the ball is in the opponents’ possession, the Middies must play defense the length of the field.  When the opposing goalie clears the ball, the Attackmen must ride their defenseman all the way to the middle of the field.  Remember the old sports adage: DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS (or at least wins games);  I wholeheartedly agree!

One of my favorite professional lacrosse players is Anthony Kelly.  Anthony played in college at Ohio State and currently plays in the MLL for the Chicago Machine and in the NLL for the Rochester Knighthawks.  Anthony is known as one of the preeminent face-off specialists in lacrosse.  In the video below, Anthony discusses the importance of defense by Middies and demonstrates a number of tips and skills.  If you are a Middie (or an Attackman!), I strongly urge you to watch the video.  Click the arrow in the center of the below video to play it.

For more on playing Defense (all positions) go to my post of September 22, 2010.

A Brief Vacation From Coaching….

Posted by Barry Marenberg on November 16, 2010

After a full Spring season, Summer travel season (as a spectator for the first time in 5 years!) and the just-ended Fall season, Coach B finally has some down time!   Granted, it will all start up again soon when my son starts his winter indoor season and I begin coaching with Full Force lacrosse in their winter training program.

This downtime though gives me an opportunity to reflect and to begin planning for the Spring season.  My league is currently holding its registration and we are anticipating a banner Spring season in all grades.  I’ve already begun drafting up some new drills, plays and have registered to attend the US Lacrosse Annual Convention in January 2011.  My goal in the coming Spring is to help EVERY player raise the level of his game no matter what his skill level is from the outset.

Winter should not be a downtime for lax players.  Playing other sports will benefit your play on the lax field.  There are also formal opportunities to play or train for lacrosse or you can do a great deal on your own.  Keep a stick in your hands as much as possible.  So long as the weather cooperates, hit the wall as much as you can.

If I can help anyone with winter training, do not hesitate to contact me.  Lastly, see my previous post for the new 2011 Chiefs T-Shirt.  A portion of the sales of each shirt will be donated to the Chiefs organization so please support our club.

HONOR THE GAME!

Team THUNDERSTRUCK – 2010 FDU Fall Ball Champs!

Posted by Barry Marenberg on November 8, 2010

The Champs!!

Words cannot convey how proud I am of each and every one of my players.  We started this whole thing with tryouts back in August and said we would go with whatever team was selected for us.  EVERY player contributed to this Championship season in so many ways.  It was great to have players from four different towns come together as a cohesive team and bond together over a period of almost 3 months.  The level of skill got better and better with each week.

We rolled along from the start with 3 big wins in a row before we came up against Sparta in game 4.  That game was an eye-opener from us.  We licked our wounds for a week and got right back to business winning the next 3 straight games to end with the #2 seed and a rematch against Sparta in the Championship.

What a Championship game it was.  We had the prime time game – 6pm on the turf under the lights.  It was a cold and windy evening but both teams were fired up from the start.  Since we knew well that Sparta was fast and powerful I told my players that we were going to switch up lines quickly and continuously to keep fresh bodies out on the field.  I also told my players that they would have to play DEFENSE non-stop no matter what position they were playing on the field.  I also told the players they were 50 minutes from a Championship and if that didn’t stick, nothing else I could say would!  THUNDERSTUCK scored first and the score was close for much of the game.  From start to finish it was a great, hard-fought lax game.  As time wound down in the second half, THUNDERSTRUCK had a 2 goal lead.  Sparta scored once more to move within one.  THUNDERSTRUCK won the ensuing face-off and was able to move the ball around and keep it down on Sparta’s half of the field as time expired.

Thanks to Coach Pat Scarpello and FDU for providing a great Fall Lax Season.

Team THUNDERSTRUCK is:

Tyler Lawton                            Hudson Barth                    Ryan Pope
Doug Anderson                       Nicholas Castagna           Chris Reynolds
Mario Argenziano                  Zachary Lima                    Liam Carney
Zander Marenberg                 Pete Dobbs                         Sean Hannaford
Connor Morang                       Patrick Trezza                  Eric Nieves
Cole Herrigel                            Greg Scaturo                     Billy Vignali
Frankie Appolonia
