Team THUNDERSTRUCK rolls again! (and a good video on shooting!)

Posted by Barry Marenberg on September 27, 2010

We had another big win on Sunday vs. Madison/Chatham.  Scoring came from numerous different players (nice to see!!). Our defense and goaltending was rock solid.  I’m having a blast coaching this team and I hope all the players are having fun as well.   There is a great deal of skill and even more potential on this team!  We’ve got Maplewood this Sunday at 6pm. Lets grab another “W”!!

Also, for the shooters on our team (which could be ANY player!), I really like the video below from Steven Brooks and Kyle Harrison on shooting out of a dodge and getting space from a defender.  Click the arrow in the video below to watch it:

Everyone Plays Defense!

Posted by Barry Marenberg on September 22, 2010

As a defenseman myself, I’ve always been partial to working with the longpoles on the teams I coach.  Playing defense, however, is not limited to the players with the longpoles!  Attackmen must play defense when riding the defenseman on a clear and half of a Middie’s responsibility is playing defense.

To that end, its important that every player on a lacrosse team understand the basics of playing defense.  Though I teach these basics to all my players, I found the following video from Brett Hughes about the fundamentals of playing defense to be very helpful.  Watch it by clicking the video:

Team THUNDERSTRUCK strikes hard in first Fall Ball game

Posted by Barry Marenberg on September 21, 2010

A bunch of 5th/6th grade laxers from different programs came together on Sunday having never played as a team and soundly defeated Summit by the score of 6-2.  Behind the stellar goaltending of both Connor Morang and Patrick Trezza, Team Thunderstruck was able to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead and continued pressing from start to finish.

The offense moved the ball nicely and had many more opportunities to score but for some exceptional saves by the Summit goalie.

Our next game is Sunday 9/26 at 5pm vs. Madison/Chatham on Field 1.  Lets make sure THUNDERSTRUCK strikes hot again!

The Art Of Lax

Posted by Barry Marenberg on September 17, 2010

Yesterday I had a great lunch meeting in NYC with Vinnie Ricasio.  Vinnie is a very talented artist and the creative mastermind behind the artwork sold on his website: www.theartoflax.com.

Like myself, Vinnie is a lax fanatic.  He’s a top-notch goalie that has played the sport for many years and is now devoting a great deal of time to his artwork.    Vinnie’s lax artwork has been displayed, auctioned and sold at Sotheby’s New York, the Society of Illustrators, Cipriani Midtown, the Kent Art Association, the Webatuck Craft Village, RIVAA-Roosevelt Island Visual Arts Association, LaxFestUSA, the Texas Lacrosse Expo/The Lax boutique, the U.S. National Lacrosse Convention, and international stages such as the Canada Day Box Lacrosse Event in Calgary and the 2010 ILF World Games of Lacrosse in Manchester, England.

Give www.theartoflax.com a visit and take a look at the awesome lacrosse drawings and paintings for sale (prices for originals and prints are very reasonable!).  Vinnie also sells t-shirts with his lax artwork screen printed on the shirt as well as some other accessories.  He’ll even do a custom drawing for you (details on his website).  This stuff makes a great gift for birthdays and the upcoming holidays and is guaranteed to satisfy your lacrosse player or fan!!

Fall/Winter Lacrosse Training & Clinics

Posted by Barry Marenberg on September 14, 2010

I recently met with Jerry O’Laughlin, the Chief Operating Officer of Building Blocks Lacrosse.  Jerry took me on a tour of the new Building Blocks facility at the old Copper Springs Tennis Club site in Gillete, NJ.  The new site is primed to be a great place to play and train!  Building Blocks has a fantastic bunch of coaches and their clinics are top-notch.  Info about their clinics and other classes is currently up on their website: http://www.bblax-portal.com/.  While the Fall clinics have started already, Winter clinic schedules will be posted in a few months.

It’s never too early to start working on your game for the Spring.

Great new website: youth1.com

Posted by Barry Marenberg on September 14, 2010

Through a good lacrosse friend I was recently introduced to a great new website at www.youth1.com (I’ve also added the link to the blogroll on the right sidebar of this page). Youth1 is the world’s first media company devoted to youth sports. It’s a fantastic site that publishes numerous stories of interest to youth athletes and parents in all sports (including Lacrosse!). There are also articles about nutrition and events.

The article I wrote last year about the value of youth athletes playing multiple sports was just published on the site. You can find it under “Most Recent” and is entitled “Coach B Talks Multiple Sports”.  I plan to contribute topics of interest from time to time so bookmark the website and visit it often.

I am psyched for our fall team and season. We are Team THUNDERSTRUCK.

While we anticipate that many players will play multiple positions in the Fall season, the following is how the team was selected (in no particular order):

Attack & Middies:
Frankie Appolonia
Hudson Barth
Liam Carney
Nicholas Castagna
Tyler Lawton
Zachary Lima
Eric Nieves
Chris Reynolds
Cole Herrigel
Ryan Pope
Billy Vignali
Pete Dobbs

Defense
Doug Anderson
Zander Marenberg
Mario Argenziano
Sean Hannaford

Goalies
Patrick Trezza
Connor Morang

Some wicked cool shorts are on order for us and I hope to have them prior to Game 1 (which is September 19th).  I don’t yet have our game time but will blast it out to you as soon as I get it.  Hope the boys are as excited as I am!

Keep practicing!
