Our Winning Streak Continues… + Stats, etc.

Posted by Barry Marenberg on April 29, 2010

We had another resounding win last night vs. a scrappy Scotch Plains-Fanwood Team.  Final score was 8-1.  More and more our games (and the wins) are becoming a TOTAL team win with every player on every line contributing in some way.  Awesome!

Here are stats from the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Game:

– Scoring Percentage: We shot 57%!!  8 goals on 15 shots.

 – Goals: Goals were scored by Carney (3), Duffy (2), Castagna (1), and McCormick (2).

Assists: On the 8 goals scored, 4 were assisted.  Two assists each by Castagna and Wong.

Save/Clears: Connor Morang made 2 saves and successfully cleared 2 out of 3 times.

Face-Offs: won 7 out of 12 face-offs.

Ground Balls: the team picked up 31 ground balls in the game.

Penalties: we committed 5 penalties.

While the above stats appear to focus on the OFFENSE, its time to recognize our defenseman who have been playing exceptionally well and shutting down the opposing teams shooters.  A big shout out to Mario Argenziano, Turner Haddad, Zander Marenberg, Brian Biskaduros, Sean Hannaford and Doug Anderson (who also doubles as our very important long stick middie).  And of course we can never forget the play of our stellar goalie, Connor Morang.  Great job guys in playing hard-nosed physical defense.  Keep it up!

We are now off to Princeton on Saturday for what promises to be a great Tournament for our team.

GO CHIEFS!!!

Stats from 4/24/10 Game vs. Westfield

Posted by Barry Marenberg on April 26, 2010

Here are stats from our big win over Westfield on Saturday:

– Scoring Percentage: We shot 32%.  11 goals on 34 shots.

 – Goals: Goals were scored by Carney (3) Kingsley (2), Duffy(1), Castagna ( 1), Barth (1), McCormick (1), Anderson (1) and Appolonia (1) for his first ever goal as a lacrosse player.  I’m looking forward to getting scoring from even more of our players in future games.

Assists: On the 11 goals scored, 6 were assisted.  Getting better on this stat!

Save/Clears: Connor Morang made 2 saves and had a 100% successful clearing rate in this game.

Face-Offs: won 6 out of 7 face-offs.  Nice!

Ground Balls: the team picked up 45 ground balls in the game.

Penalties: we committed 2 penalties and only served one minute of penalty time.  Excellent.

Next game is Wednesday night at GL vs. Scotch Plains-Fanwood.  SPF is a team we have never played before as Chiefs.  Face-off is 6:30pm.  All players must be at the field by 5:45pm for warm-ups.

Stats from Cranford Game (4/21/10). Another Win!

Posted by Barry Marenberg on April 22, 2010

A win is a win.  It seemed a sloppy game last night but the weather was a bit crummy and it was getting darker and darker as the game progressed.  We obviously all still came together to pull out a scrappy win.

– Scoring Percentage: We shot 26%.  Six goals on 23 shots.  There were a number of missed shots and we will work on shooting more accurately in practice.

 – Goals: Goals were scored by Carney (Hat Trick!), Nieves (1), Castagna ( 1), and Barth (1) for his first ever goal as a lacrosse player.  Great job guys.  I’m looking forward to getting scoring from more players in future games.

Assists: On the 6 goals scored, 3 were assisted.  Not bad.

Save/Clears: Connor Morang was back in goal for us this week and played very well.  Connor had 7 saves and successfully cleared 4 out of 5 times!

Face-Offs: won 5 out of 9 face-offs.  Better than 50%,

Ground Balls: the team picked up 23 ground balls in the game.  This is less than our previous game and in part attributable to the fact that we kept the ball in the air much more than the prior games.

Penalties: we committed 2 minutes of penalties.  Much better.

Full weekend ahead of us.  Westfield on Saturday at GL at 1pm.  Maplewood on Sunday at Columbia H.S. at 1:30pm.  Both Westfield and Maplewood are very competitive teams so the Chiefs will need to be fully on their game.  I know we can do it!

 See you on the field.

Stats From Game Vs Watchung Hills (4/17/10)

Posted by Barry Marenberg on April 18, 2010

Awesome game on Saturday vs. Watchung Hills – a team we did not beat last year!  I’m very proud of all our players.  Here are some stats from the game (thanks again to Dave Hannaford for keeping the scorebook):

– Scoring Percentage: We shot 30% but we scored 9 goals!  Our scoring percentage went down from the previous game but we scored more goals and took a lot of shots.

Goals: Goals were scored by Nieves (2), Castagna( 2), Carney (1), Haddad (1) who went end to end and scored with a long stick!, Pencek (1) for his first of the season, Fevola (1) for his first of the season and Reynolds (1) for his first ever goal as a lacrosse player.  Great job guys.  I’m looking forward to getting scoring from even more players in future games.

Assists: On the 9 goals scored, 3 were assisted.  This is a stat I would like to improve a great deal.

Save/Clears: Patrick Trezza playing goal for us up from the 4th grade squad had 7 saves and successfully cleared 8 out of 9 times!.  Wow!  That’s a great stat for him and our transition defensemen and middies.

Face-Offs: in spite of the score we again didn’t win the majority of our face-offs (only 2 of 5) so we will work on this in practice.

Ground Balls: the team picked up 28 ground balls in the game.  This is less than our previous game and in part attributable to the fact that we kept the ball in the air much more than the prior games.

Penalties: we committed 5 minutes of penalties yesterday: 3 pushing technicals,  2 slashing penalties, 1 trip and 1 illegal check.  We’ve got to try and cut down on the penalties.

I hope our players come out fired up again for our game on Wednesday vs. Cranford.

See you on the field!

Big Win Over Watchung Hills. Long Hill Game Canceled

Posted by Barry Marenberg on April 17, 2010

We had a huge 9-3 win over Watchung Hills today.  Very impressive passing and scoring from all our players.  Fantastic defense and stellar goaltending from Patrick Trezza, who played up from the 4th grade squad in Connor Morang and James Duffy’s absence.  Thanks a million Patrick!

Our game tomorrow (Sunday 4/18) has been canceled by Long Hill.  They do not have enough 5th graders and so they have combined their 5th and 6th grade squad into one and will be playing our 6th grade Chiefs.

Our next game is Wednesday night against Cranford at 6:30pm at GL.  More info to come.

Stats from the Watchung Hills game will be uploaded in the next couple of days.

Our busy lax weekend and the week ahead of us…

Posted by Barry Marenberg on April 16, 2010

We are now moving into the meaty part of our season (the FUN part!!).  Here’s what we’ve got on our plate:

Saturday (4/17) – Our first home game vs. Watchung Hills.  The game will be played at the top grass field at GL.  Face-off is 1pm and all players should be at the field by 12:15.  Watchung Hills is an intense team and thus I expect a very competitive game!

Sunday (4/18) – away game vs. Long Hill at Riverside Park.  Face-off is set for 3:30pm and players should be at the field by 2:45pm.  Long Hill is a familiar opponent and we always have a great time playing against them.

Tuesday (4/20) – practice as usual.

Wednesday (4/21) – home game at GL vs. Cranford.  Face-off is 6:30pm and all players should be at the field at 5:45pm.  As of the writing of this post (4/16) we are scheduled to play on the turf.

Thursday (4/22) – practice as usual to get set for another full weekend of lax.

All players have been working  very hard to prepare for our games.  I hope to move into next weekend with another 3 wins to add to our record!

GO CHIEFS!!

Stats from Sunday’s game at Somerset Hills + More

Posted by Barry Marenberg on April 13, 2010

We played another great game on Sunday vs. Somerset Hills.  We were missing a number of players due to Spring vacation, etc. but all our players in attendance stepped up and played hard to get the well-earned win.  Here are some stats from the game (thanks again to Dave Hannaford for keeping the scorebook):

– Scoring Percentage: We shot 45% meaning 5 goals out of 11 shots on goal – almost 50%– pretty good!!.

Goals: Goals were scored by Carney and Castagna.  I’m looking forward to getting scoring from more players in future games.

Assists: On the 5 goals scored, 2 were assisted by Eric Nieves.  Barth and Carney also had assists and one of the goals was unassisted.

Save/Clears: Connor Morang had 4 saves and successfully cleared 4 out of 6 times.  Very Nice!  That’s a great stat for him and our transition defensemen and middies.

Face-Offs: in spite of the score we didn’t win the majority of our face-offs so we will work on this in practice.

Ground Balls: the team picked up 41 ground balls in the game.  That is an awesome number.

Penalties: we committed 2 slashing penalties and were called for 5 pushes.  We need to avoid the ground ball push penalties.

Busy weekend coming up with our first home game on Saturday vs. Watchung Hills (always a tough opponent) and Sunday at Long Hill.

Lastly, I was reading an article online the other day by a long-time lacrosse player and now a sucessful coach.  He stated flat out that  “The longer you have been playing, the harder it is to develop your weak hand.  All new players should start working both hands. You aren’t a total threat unless you can go both ways.”  I couldn’t agree with this more and that is why I continue to implore the boys to work on cradling on their non-dominant side and to practice throwing/catching/shooting with their weak hand when they practice on their own.

See you on the field!
