Learn from watching great lax on TV

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 28, 2010

One great way to learn lacrosse and/or improve is to watch top-notch college players or professionals play the game.  A lot can be gained from watching how the players cradle, scoop ground balls and pass and shoot.  Watching a good offense move the ball around the perimeter and find the open man to shoot and score shows young players how a great offense works.  Watching a defense play physically and take away the ball from an offense player or watching a goalie make a great save and clear the ball up field shows our young players how a great defense operates.

ESPNU and ESPN2 have a ton of great NCAA lacrosse games on this season.  There were 4 great games on today (Sat. 2/27) and there are a couple more on tomorrow (Sun. 2/28).  Take a look at the schedule in the link at the top of my blog page for the full listing of all ESPN games on TV this season.

There is also some great local lacrosse at Drew University and Fairleigh Dickinson.  A little further away is Rutgers and Princeton.  Links to these teams are on the right side of my blog page.   In a few more weeks the high schools will start their seasons.  As you may know, Summit H.S. was the NJ State Champion lax team last year.

While practice is the best way to learn and improve as a lacrosse player, a great deal can be gained from watching the experts and pros.  Find a game and have your player watch and learn.

Chiefs 5th Grade Team 2010!!

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 27, 2010

The Chiefs 2010 lacrosse season is officially here!  The coaching staff has met and strategized.  Our team parents meeting was held on 2/24.  Our first team practice will be Saturday March 6, 2010 at 9am at GL H.S. in the back lot/field.

The entire coaching staff is looking forward to a very exciting and competitive season.  We hope all the players are as excited about the season as we are.  My team had a great season last year (Record: 14-3-1) and I truly hope to improve upon that this year.  Our schedule is a tough one and we will be playing some top-notch teams so we will be working very hard in practice to get the boys in great shape for the season.   The complete team roster and our schedule will be posted here and e-mailed to you within the next week.

Be sure to check here often for a lot of helpful information.  I will post frequently about the team itself, lacrosse-related information, helpful drills that the players can do at home and lots of other stuff.

I look forward to seeing you all on March 6th.

Our Winter Season Comes To An End…

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 21, 2010

Well, our season has come to an end.  I had a great time coaching the team this Winter and I hope all the players had a lot of fun.  I know we all wish our record could have been different but as I said from the start, this Winter season was simply about having fun and staying active.   We had a number of brand new players for this winter season, some who scored their first lacrosse goals ever!  We had a goalie who never stepped into a crease prior to the start of this season.  I’m proud of all the players for showing up each week and giving it their best.

I look forward to continuing to work with all the players as we move into the Chiefs Spring season.  I also want to thank Brendan Cook and Pierson Churchill, our two players from Chatham, for being a part of our team this season.  I hope to see you guys in the Spring!

Keep practicing guys!

Final Winter Lax Season Game

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 15, 2010

Our final winter game is this Saturday night (2/20) at 8pm on Field 1 vs. Millburn.  Millburn is another team we’ve played previously (and tied).  It would go a long way for the boys to end the winter season with a solid win.  I know they are capable of it!

Please have your player at ISP by 7:30pm.  If you have not already informed me that your son will not be able to play on Saturday night, please let me know ASAP.

See you on the field!

Friday Night 2/12 Game

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 9, 2010

Our game this week is on Friday (2/12) at 6pm on Field 1 vs Sparta.  Recall that we played Sparta to a tie in week 1 of the season so it would be great to beat them straight up this time.

Please be at ISP by 5:30pm to dress and warm up.  If you will be unable to play this week, please let me know ASAP.

See you on the field!

Winter League Playoffs

Posted by Barry Marenberg on February 1, 2010

First off, I just wanted to say what a great game the team played on Friday night vs Highlands.  It was a total team win.  All the boys contributed by playing defense, scoring and great passing.  It was a vast improvement over the previous weeks.  We need to maintain this momentum!

This week is our first playoff game.  The game is scheduled for SATURDAY (2/6) at 9pm on Field 1 vs. Kinnelon.  All players should be at ISP by 8:30pm.  If any player cannot make the game on Saturday night, please contact me ASAP.
